PMSGY Solar Subsidy: The Only Documents You Need

Simple Guide for Homeowners

Applying for rooftop solar under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana (PMSGY) is exciting. But the moment people reach the document section, many homeowners panic.

Mandatory Documents

These are the documents every customer should keep ready before applying on the National Portal.

Aadhaar Card (Mandatory)

Used for identity verification and Aadhaar-linked OTP approval.

  • Make sure your name matches the name used in the solar subsidy application.

Latest Electricity Bill (Mandatory)

This confirms your electricity connection details and rooftop location.

  • The name on the electricity bill plays a crucial role in subsidy approval.

PAN Card (Mandatory)

PAN is required to verify your bank details for the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of the subsidy.

  • Your PAN name and Aadhaar name must match.

Bank Passbook or Cancelled Cheque (Mandatory)

This is used for transferring the subsidy amount directly to your bank account.

  • The bank account holder’s name must be the same as the applicant’s name.

Property Ownership Proof (Conditional)

This is only required if the electricity bill is not in your name.

Valid ownership proof includes:

  • Sale deed
  • House tax receipt
  • Notarised affidavit

If the electricity bill is already in your name, this document is not required.

Passport-Size Photograph (Required)

A soft digital copy is sufficient. This will be uploaded to the national portal during application.

Mobile Number Linked to Aadhaar (Mandatory)

This is essential for OTP verification during registration.

Without an Aadhaar-linked mobile number, the application cannot proceed.

Documents You Do NOT Need to Provide

Your solar vendor or installer will handle these.

Many customers assume they must arrange technical documents themselves. In reality, your installer uploads these during installation and commissioning.

These include:

  • Installation photos (GPS-tagged)
  • Work completion report
  • Joint inspection report
  • Solar system invoice
  • Technical specifications and warranty documents

Your vendor is responsible for uploading these documents to the national portal during inspection and commissioning.

Quick Summary: What You Actually Need

You only need seven simple items from your side:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Latest electricity bill
  • PAN card
  • Bank passbook or cancelled cheque
  • Property ownership proof (only if the electricity bill is not in your name)
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Aadhaar-linked mobile number

Final Word

The PMSGY subsidy process may appear complicated, but the documentation is straightforward.

If your documents are clear and the names match across Aadhaar, bank account, and electricity bill, approval usually happens smoothly. Once approved, the subsidy amount is transferred directly to your bank account.
