Dreaming of bringing down your electricity bills with clean, solar energy? The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY) is your chance to turn that dream into reality. Launched to promote solar energy adoption in Indian homes, this government-backed initiative makes rooftop solar both affordable and accessible.

Before you dive into the registration process, it’s essential to understand who can apply and what the basic eligibility requirements are. Let’s simplify it for you!

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

1. Only Indian Residents Are Eligible

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is open to Indian citizens residing within the country. It is meant exclusively for domestic electricity consumers, not for offices, shops, or industrial buildings.

2. You Must Own the Home (and the Roof)

The scheme applies to homeowners with a rooftop suitable for solar panel installation. Your roof should be free from shade, structurally strong, and spacious enough for at least a 1–3 kW solar system.

If you live in an apartment, your housing society (RWA or GHS) can apply for a collective rooftop system under the group model.

3. You Need a Valid Electricity Connection

You must have an active electricity connection with your local DISCOM (power utility). This ensures your rooftop solar system can be integrated with the power grid for smooth operation and billing adjustments.

4. You Should Not Have Claimed a Solar Subsidy Earlier

Households that have already availed a subsidy under previous government solar programs are not eligible for another one. However, if you installed a smaller system earlier, you may expand it up to 3 kW as per MNRE guidelines.

5. Residential Premises Only

The program is strictly for residential use, including individual homes, apartments, and group housing societies. Commercial and industrial properties are excluded, ensuring that government incentives go toward empowering households.

6. Use Only Approved (DCR) Solar Modules

To receive the subsidy, your solar system must use DCR-compliant modules and cells, meaning panels made in India using domestically manufactured components. Imported solar panels are not eligible for subsidy.

This supports Make in India and ensures long-term performance and reliability.
